July 26th, 2010 - Shibley Righton LLP partners with the University of Windsor for its Toronto alumni outreach program
UWindsor expands outreach to alumni and prospective students in the GTA
New Toronto Advancement office opens in heart of the financial district
(Windsor, Ontario, July 26, 2010) - The University of Windsor has announced two major initiatives that will enhance its outreach to alumni and friends, and expand ways of supporting existing and prospective students.
Through a partnership that includes Shibley Righton LLP, a law firm with offices in both Windsor and Toronto; and the University of Windsor Alumni Association, the University of Windsor has opened a University Advancement office in the heart of Toronto. Sheila MacKinnon, a partner in Shibley Righton and a member of the University of Windsor’s Board of Governors, coordinated the donation of office space at the firm’s Toronto office located at 250 University Avenue. The University of Windsor Alumni Association will be contributing $180,000 over three years to support alumni engagement in Toronto, and in other key cities and regions across the country.
“This new partnership is a reflection of the University’s past successes and future promise,” explained President Alan Wildeman during his announcement to more than 200 people who had gathered for the 2010 Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament and Dinner in LaSalle, Ontario. “We are deeply grateful to Shibley Righton and to the Alumni Association for underscoring with us the importance of reaching out to such a large community of supporters,” he said.
“In 2013 we will be raising the curtain on the next 50 years of the University, and with everyone’s support we can unveil to the world a University that is focused on students, offers state-of-the-art facilities for our education and research, and is helping to enrich our broader community,” said Dr. Wildeman.
John Bergholz, Vice President, University Advancement, had praise for the commitment of alumni to students and the future of the University. “More than 16,000 of our close to 100,000 alumni are in the Toronto region alone,” he said. “Whether across our city and region, in Toronto or elsewhere, the University of Windsor has a great story to tell and alumni are helping us tell it.”
Tom Porter, President of the Alumni Association, recognized that the Toronto office will also serve a broader role. “The Toronto office will be one more way in which we can reach out to prospective students, to tell them about the great education and experience they can get in Windsor,” he said. “It will make it much easier to launch student recruitment, fundraising and other activities to get people engaged.”
In addition to the Toronto office, the University also announced it is in the process of establishing a US foundation, called “Friends of the University of Windsor,” which will make it more convenient for donors in the US to contribute to the University. “This is one more step in making it easier for people to be engaged,” said Mr. Bergholz. “We have more than 3,500 alumni across the US who remain grateful for what the University of Windsor has done for them.”

December 3, 2009 – Extended Medical Leave - An Employers' Right to Medical Information
Employers today are often asked to accept and interpret doctors' notes that sometimes provide no information other than the employee is "unable to work." Employers are left wondering what action they can or cannot take when there is reason to doubt an illness or disability claimed by an employee. Correctly navigating the minefield of medical information, and knowing your legal rights regarding access to employee medical information, can mean the difference between a productive workplace and being found liable under various legislation, including the Employment Standards Act, the Human Rights Code, and various privacy legislation for payment of significant monetary damages. Employers need assistance. Shibley Righton LLP can provide it.
The seminar will be held at the Holiday Inn Select, 1855 Huron Church Road, Windsor. Brian Nolan, Sheila MacKinnon, Paul Howard and Bryce Chandler will be speaking at the seminar series.
