Sheila MacKinnon

Sheila MacKinnon loves golf, good food and good company. Unfortunately, she doesn't find much time to enjoy these interests when she's trying to balance her busy law practice, which splits her time between the Shibley Righton offices in both Windsor and Toronto.

Despite her busy lifestyle, Sheila is quick to brighten up either office with her glowing smile. Assertive, thoughtful and always calm, cool and collected, Sheila is more than capable of handling the many professional demands placed on her with ease.

Sheila brings a wide variety of skills and business experience to the Education and Public Law Group. In the early years of Sheila's legal practice, she specialized in the areas of corporate - commercial law and income tax planning and litigation. Previously, Sheila has gained practical experience as the operator and manager of her family-owned retirement home business in Essex County.

As a member of the Education and Public Law Group, Sheila has been involved in various politically-charged and sensitive matters, including investigations under internal board policies dealing with sexual harassment, review of workplace employment policies, investigation of human rights complaints, negotiations with land developers for the provision of financial contributions toward the costs of pupil spaces in residential developments, participation in several school board appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board, the negotiation of the collective agreement between a daycare centre and its employees, providing advice to daycare centres on corporate and employment matters, information and privacy matters, suspension, exclusion and expulsion matters and opinions on various student issues.

Sheila has appeared before various Courts and administrative tribunals at both the provincial and federal level. In addition to representing school boards, Sheila acts as counsel to the Canadian Education Association and the Ontario Public School Board's Association, for which she prepared the "Legal Liabilities and Responsibilities" chapter in OPSBA's Trustee Handbook.

Sheila has also managed to find time to contribute in the area of professional development. She was a Sessional Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University for the Civil Procedure course from 1991 to 1994 and has conducted many internal workshops for various organizations and spoke at numerous conferences on a variety of issues. Sheila also is involved in various organizations, including the Canadian Bar Association, and has served as a director of the Canadian Association for the Practical Study of Law in Education (CAPSLE), the Toronto Educational Opportunity Fund, the Crime Concern of Metropolitan Toronto, the Local Business Improvement Association (BIA), and the Woodslee Credit Union.
