Ontario’s expansion of online services for small claims court is an encouraging step forward in creating a more modern justice system, says Toronto litigator Leanne Flett.

E-filing small claims has been around for a couple of years for disputes associated with formal contracts or agreements, such as unpaid loans and credit card debt.

Now, that’s been extended to all small claims up to $25,000, including those for property damage and personal injury. Flett, an associate with a general litigation practice in the Toronto office of Shibley Righton LLP, says claims that go beyond $25,000 will still have to be filed in person.
