Case confirms court unlikely to extend statutory lien rights

Toronto litigator Leanne Flett's love affair with the courtroom could be described as a slow-burning romance.

It certainly wasn't love at first sight, says Flett, who as a child paid a visit to the local courthouse to see her mother, a criminal trial lawyer, in action.

“I thought it was so boring,” says Flett, now an associate with a general litigation practice in the Toronto office of Shibley Righton LLP.

From that early encounter, she concluded just one thing: “I wasn't going to be a lawyer,” Flett says. However, with a little more life experience and an arts degree under her belt, she began to reconsider.

“I slowly came to the realization that I was a lot more like my successful lawyer mother than I thought. I love writing and debating, and looking at things rationally. I always want to take something messy and turn it into something organized,” Flett tells AdvocateDaily.com. “I took some time off, thought about it, and came to the conclusion that this was actually what I was meant to do.”
