A recent uptick in corporate fraud – motivated by the economic downturn and the resulting staff reductions that have placed more responsibility on fewer employees – highlights the need for companies to be aware of how they treat their staff, says Toronto litigator Joel Watson.
“It is the old story of too many eggs in one basket. Without some redundancy or overlap, many companies leave themselves exposed to those few seemingly hardworking employees with ulterior motives. So no one is watching, and the employee also starts to feel underpaid, and when the opportunity arises they take it. This is further assisted by attempts to go paperless and off-shoring of certain functions because oversight is more difficult,” says Watson, partner with Shibley Righton LLP.Coupled with this, says Watson, is the sense of entitlement that is prevalent in society.
