Mission statement dispute highlights lessons for charities

When a client becomes abusive or mean-spirited, it’s important to remember they may be reacting to other things happening in their lives, Toronto litigator Deborah Howden tells Lawyers Weekly.

Howden, partner with Shibley Righton LLP, says that when it comes to dealing with difficult clients, genuine empathy and support can go a long way. However, lawyers should make it clear that abuse will not be tolerated in a calm and professional manner.

She tells the legal publication that these instances can be an opportunity to turn a difficult client into a great one.

Howden also says that issues around billing can be avoided by early discussions around hourly rates, the anticipated amount of work, with a reminder that it’s not always possible to know how much work will be required ahead of time.
