Ontario Human Rights Commission set to discuss anti-Black racism in Education

April 27, 2023

On April 25, 2023, the Ontario Human Rights Commission provided an update on its plans to address systemic anti-Black racism in Ontario’s publicly funded education system.  The OHRC said it will host a roundtable discussion with students and duty-holders in the education sector on issues of anti-Black racism.  Future steps include collaborating with community voices, schools, educators, and duty-holders to develop an Action Plan released within the next school year “that empowers and holds duty-holders accountable.”

As the OHRC looks to address the issue of anti-Black racism, school boards are well-advised to consider their policies and practices with a diversity-equity-inclusion lens.
